Plant Name

Baptisia australis

(Baptisia caerulea, Baptisia minor, Baptisia confusa, Baptisis versicolor)

"The name of the genus is derived from the Ancient Greek word bapto, meaning "to dip" or "immerse", while the specific name australis is Latin for "southern"." from Wikipedia.

Common Name

Blue false indigo, indigo weed, rattleweed, rattlebush and horsefly weed. The common name "blue false indigo" is derived from it being used as a substitute for the superior dye-producing plant Indigofera tinctoria.

Soil

Acidic or Neutral Sand and Loam - grows best in lime-free, well-drained stony soil in full sun to part shade.

Comment

Erect Form. Pruning Group 14.

"Baptisia are perennials with branched stems bearing three-parted leaves and terminal or axillary racemes of pea flowers, followed by conspicuous inflated pods.

Baptisia australis is an herbaceous perennial forming a clump to 1.2m, with grey-green, trifoliate leaves and erect, lupin-like racemes of violet-blue flowers, followed by inflated, dark grey pods.

Grow in open, porous, preferably sandy soil in full sun; drought resistant once roots have penetrated the soil. Best left undisturbed, although vigorous clumps may be carefully divided in spring. Cut down once foliage has blackened." from Royal Horticultural Society.

"It is native to much of central and eastern North America and is particularly common in the Midwest, but it has also been introduced well beyond its natural range. Naturally it can be found growing wild at the borders of woods, along streams or in open meadows. It often has difficulty seeding itself in its native areas due to parasitic weevils that enter the seed pods, making the number of viable seeds very low." from Wikipedia.

"Resist the temptation to cut the plant back in autumn since the seed-pods and slender stems look wonderful frosted in the winter garden." from Crocus.

"Once used as toy rattles, today they are valued in dried flower arrangements. Plants become somewhat shrubby after bloom, displaying attractive, clover-like blue-green leaves. Early Americans used the plant as a substitute for true indigo in making blue dyes. Grow as a specimen or in groups in borders, or naturalize in cottage gardens, prairie areas, meadows or native plant gardens." from Missouri Botanical Garden.

Available from Crocus in the UK with Lazy S'S Farm Nursery in America.

Phlox paniculata 'Nesperis'

Dear Mr C H Garnons-Williams,
Thank you for your enquiry to the Royal Horticultural Society's Members' Advisory Service.
On investigation, I have concluded that the phlox labelled as 'Nesperis' in the garden is in fact: Phlox x arendsii 'Hesperis' .
A search on the internet will generate a great deal of information on this cultivar.
I hope this information is helpful.
Yours sincerely,

Tony Dickerson
Horticultural Advisor

From The Garden November 2013 Issue:-
"Proposed European Commission legislation could make it mandatory for all 'plant reproductive material' to be officially registered and described. According to John David, RHS Chief Scientist, the Commission initially thought that legislating to give all plants propagated for sale an 'Ordinary Recognised Description' (ORD) would only result in minor changes to existing rules. But of the 52,000 cultivars currently listed in the RHS Plant Finder, only 1500 have Plant Breeders Rights and therefore an ORD. Costs for producing each ORD are unknown, but £300 to £500 has been mooted. Plant Heritage says threatened plants could be lost, as many National Plant Collectio holders rely on sales to fund the propagation and sharing of plant material".
Makes you wonder who would pay for the ORDs on Wildflowers and which of the existing nurseries would pay for which of the ORDs for the plants that they grow - and thus spending £500 extra on their plant would insure that they would be selling them at a loss, since the other nurseries would not incurr that charge for that plant. Marvellous way of destroying the nursery business in the UK.

I wonder if there is a mail-order nursery in China that grows and sells this plant in China with its information on its website in both Chinese and English? Then, I could copy the information from China into the Comments Row of that Plant Description page in this website with links to both its English and Chinese page from its Chinese Nursery website about that plant. The information in Chinese and it's English translation could be sent via email to The Embassy of China in Britain; and thence to me using this email address. Then, people from China visiting this country could inform their relatives where they also could get that plant.

I am attempting the same free link to mail-order nursery service for the people of Europe, Latvia, America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
