It is sad to reflect that in England so few gardens open to the public label their plants or label them so that the label is visible when that plant is in flower, so that visitors can identify; and then later locate and purchase that plant.

Few mail-order nurseries provide the detail as shown in my rose or heather galleries.

If you want to sell a product, it is best to display it. When I sold my Transit van, I removed its signage, cleaned it and took photos of the inside and outside before putting them onto an advert in Autotrader amongst more than 2000 other Transit vans - it was sold in 20 minutes.

If mail-order nurseries could put photos to the same complexity from start of the year to its end with the different foliage colours and stages of flowering on Wikimedia Commons, then the world could view the plant before buying it, and idiots like me would have valid material to work with.

I have been in the trade (until ill health forced my Sole Trader retirement in 2013) working in designing, constructing and maintaining private gardens for decades and since 2005 when this site was started, I have asked any nursery in the world to supply photos. R.V. Roger in Yorkshire allowed me to use his photos from his website in 2007 and when I got a camera to spend 5 days in July 2014 at my expense taking photos of his roses growing in his nursery field, whilst his staff was propagating them. I gave him a copy of those photos.

Asphodelus

Asphodels are useful and ornamental in borders and in wild gardens. When well-grown, plants of Asphodelus ramosus, the King's Spear, are truly handsome in 1901. They like a rich, sandy loam with some manure added, and should always have plenty of water when growing. The principal species are the following:-

• Asphodelus acaulis, pink, flowering in May, an Algerian species and a little tender;
• Asphodelus fistulosus, white, in summer, and 18 inches (45 cm) high; and
• Asphodelus ramosus, 60 inches (150 cms) high, in summer, with white blooms striped with brown.
• Asphodelus albus is a form of the last.

Asphodelus is a genus of about 20 species in the Asphodelaceae family. They are native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia, but primarily the Mediterranean. Many have a small rhizomatous crown and thick, fleshy roots.

Asphodelus acaulis

Asphodelus acaulis forms basal rosettes of narrow, succulent leaves and produces peach-pink flowers in early spring on short stems. It is the only low-growing member of the genus and is native to the mountains of Algeria and Morocco. The pictured plants in the first photo by Jane McGary are growing in a bulb frame in Oregon, kept dry in summer. Propagation is by seed or division of the dormant crowns; the older crowns may die after flowering.

Asphodelus fistulosus

Asphodelus fistulosus has smaller flowers with wider petals, similarly striped. Also native to the Mediterranean, and weedy in other Mediterranean climates including California, though the tag on these plants, in the Orto Botanico in Rome, indicated that it is redlisted in Lazio.

Asphodelus aestivus (syn. A. ramosus, A. microcarpus)

Asphodelus aestivus (syn. A. ramosus, A. microcarpus) is a well-known element of Mediterranean flora, associated with overly-grazed pastures and shallow soils, being fire- and grazing-resistant. Plants are rather showy in bloom and occasionally harvested as cut flowers by day trippers. Because of this it is called the 'common asphodel'.

Asphodelus albus

Asphodelus albus, also native to the Mediterranean, has starry white flowers with brown stripes down the middle of the tepals. PBS list member Jane McGary cautions that it can look messy when it goes dormant in late summer and recommends deadheading it so it will look better and to prevent enthusiastic self-seeding. She states mature plants are very easy to divide when dormant, and seedlings flower in their second or third year. Predators do not seem to touch it.

Belamcanda punctata (Syn. Pardanthus sinensis) has become Iris domestica

This distinct, Iris-like plant is usually known as Pardanthus sinensis, and it is too seldom met with with in gardens in 1901. It is a little tender, but may be cultivated in a sheltered position in light soil. It grows about 24 inches (60 cms) high, and has orange flowers spotted with brown, and Iris-like leaves. I prefer to plant it in spring.

Bloomeria

Bloomerias are pretty, hardy, golden-yellow flowered plants, which are but little grown in 1901, but deserve a place in our gardens. The easiest to obtain is

• Bloomeria aurea, which grows about 12 inches (30 cms) high and has an umbel of pretty flowers, in July.
• The only other species, Bloomeria clevelandii, closely resembles it, but has smaller flowers and more slender stems. They like a warm position in rich, sandy soil, and may be planted in early autumn about 2 inches (5 cms) deep.

Bloomeria is a genus with only 3 species which is native to the dry foothills of southern California and Baja Mexico where it is found in grasslands, open woodlands, or the edge of chaparral. This genus has been considered to be a member of many different families in the past (Amaryllidaceae, Liliaceae, Alliaceae). Recent work in 2010 is now placing it in a new family, Themidaceae, which includes other California genera (Androstephium, Brodiaea, Dichelostemma, Muilla, and Triteleia). Bloomeria looks superficially much like Allium but each anther filament bears a cup-like appendage at its base.

Bloomeria aurea is Golden Stars

Bloomeria aurea grow in dry flats and hillsides, and grassy slopes and ridges often in heavy soils and especially in foothill woods, up to 1500 meters in elevation. Golden stars grow in the coastal sage scrub, chaparral, valley grassland and oak woodland plant communities from Baja California in Mexico, to Santa Barbara and Kern Counties in central California.

Bloomeria aurea is cultivated as an ornamental plant by specialty native plant nurseries. The plants require a warm position and well-drained rich sandy loam. During the growing season plants need moisture. When dormancy sets in and the foliage dies down, they should be kept dry until the autumn growth appears. These plants can rarely be seen in the colder areas, since the temperatures down between -5 and -10 °C can be tolerated.

Horticultural ranges for Bloomeria aurea are:

• ph: 6.00 to 8.00

• usda: zones 6 to 10

• height: 0.20–0.50 metres (0.66–1.64 ft)

• width: 0.20 metres (0.66 ft)

• rainfall: 21–73 centimetres (8.3–28.7 in)

Bloomeria clevelandii is San Diego goldenstar

It is native to a strip of scrub and coastal grassland in San Diego County, California, and adjacent Baja California, Mexico.

Bloomeria clevelandii is a perennial herb growing from a corm and producing 2 to 8 narrow leaves up to 15 centimeters long. The erect inflorescence arises from ground level and may be up to 70 centimeters tall. It is shaped like an umbel with up to 30 flowers borne on pedicels 2 or 3 centimeters long. The flower has six green-veined yellow tepals each up to a centimeter long.

The species is threatened by the destruction of its coastal habitat to urban development and by impacts from vehicles and trash dumping.

Brodlaea

The Brodiaeas have of late benn deservedly coming to the front, and their use adds much to the charms of the garden in June and July, although growers must make up their minds to lose a few the first winter should the season be a damp one. Many are very beautiful, and will repay the little trouble they give. They vary much in height, some sending up tall scapes with many-flowered umbels, while others are quite dwarf. They like a light soil and a sinny position, and ought to be planted about 2 or 3 inches (5 or 7.5 cms) deep.

• Brodlaea bridgesii and Brodlaea laxa bear some remblance to each other, and grow from 12 to 24 inches (30 to 60 cms) high. They have flowers of a purple blue.
• Brodlaea candida resembles these, but has paler bluish flowers.
• Brodlaea capitata is another tall grower with blue flowers, the white variety, Brodlaea alba, making a good cmpanion.
• Brodlaea coccinea, whose proper name is Brevoortia Ida-Mai, is a fine plant with tall stems and scarlet, green-tipped flowers.

• Brodlaea congesta is a tall grower with purple-blue flowers;
• and other tall species with dark flowers are Brodlaea multiflora and Brodlaea californica.
• A pretty section with yellow flowers is made up of Brodlaea hendersoni, with its yellow flowers striped with purple,
• Brodlaea crocea, and
• Brodlaea ixiodes and its varities Brodlaea erecta and Brodlaea splendens. The latter species is sometimes known as Cilliprora flava or lutea.
• Brodlaea howelli is a fine species, with a tall stem and porcelain flowers;
• the variety Brodlaea lilacina is pleasing.
• Brodlaea lactea and Brodlaea pedunculata are both good white species,
• and the late-blooming Brodlaea orcutti has light blue flowers.
• A charmng set of dwarf forms will be found among Brodlaea grandiflora,
• Brodlaea purdyi,
• Brodlaea rosea, and
• Brodlaea stellaris, with blue or purple flowers;
• Brodlaea volubilis is a curious twining species, which needs support when it makes growth. It grows about 60 inches (150 cms) high.

The only Bulbocodium to be met with, except in a few collections in 1901, is Bulbocodium ruthenicum, almost universally known as Bulbocodium vernum, a pretty early spring flowering plant with rosy purple flowers, and much resembling a Crocus in bloom. It thrives in any soil, but should be protected from slugs (see Pest Control in Companion Planting). There is a variegated-leaved form. These should be planted about 2 inches (5 cms) deep.

Scented Flora of the World by Roy Genders - was first published in 1977 and this paperback edition was published on 1 August 1994 ISBN 0 7090 5440 8:-
This comprehensive book looks at scented flowers and leaves of plants from all over the world. The work has been prepared to the standards of the Index Kewensis, and is filled with the most interesting facts about the scented flora of the world.

I am using the above book from someone who took 30 years to compile it from notes made of his detailed observations of growing plants in preference to
The RHS Companion to Scented Plants Hardcover – 16 Oct 2014 by Stephen Lacey (Author), Andrew Lawson (Photographer) ISBN 978-0-7112-3574-8 even though this is the only major reference work on scent and scented plants which is endorsed by the Royal Horticultural Society. The Propagation of Alpines by Lawrence D. Hills. Published in 1950 by Faber and Faber Limited describes every method of propagation for 2,500 species. Unlike modern books published since 1980, this one states exactly what to do and is precisely what you require if you want to increase your alpines.

In planning your beds for your garden, before the vertical hard-landscaping framework and the vertical speciman planting is inserted into your soft landscaping plan, the following is useful to consider:-
1. The ground plan usually depends upon 1 or more unalterable existing features. The position of the doors of the house will dictate the positions of paths, the shortest route to the kitchen may indicate the best place for a paved area for eating and drinking out of doors, or the kept trees/shrubs may indicate what garden style is used.
2. Rules of Proportion -
A. A border should be roughly 1/2 as wide as the hedge or wall behind it.
B. The proportion of planted areas to paved or turfed areas should be 1/3 to 2/3, or a 1/4 to 3/4, not 1/2 and 1/2.
C. Within a bed or border, unless a 2-dimensional pattern on the ground is the objective, the height and bulk of the plants should be varied to avoid monotony; it is particularly important to provide strong planting, in terms of either height or bulk or both, at either end of a long bed.
D. The ground surface provides a background to the plants that is as important as the hedges, walls or fences that surround it. Grass is perhaps the most satisfying carpet to use, the cool green forming a restful antidote to the dancing colours of the flowers. Use different coloured pea-shingle inside Cedar Gravel for people in wheelchairs, or infirm in their legs or who suffer from Hay Fever.

Since 2006, I have requested photos etc from the Mail-Order Nurseries in the UK and later from the rest of the World. Few nurseries have responded.
I worked for a lady, who with her husband took 35 mm slides of plants in the 1960's and 1970's. She allowed me to digitise some of her Kodachrome slides, which I have used in my website. I discovered that at least the green colour of the foliage became very much darker over that period of years to 2008, by comparing wildflower photos from her slides with digital photos supplied by a current Wildflower mail-order nursery, so I stopped creating my Foliage Galleries.
I bought myself a camera some years ago and started taking photos, some of which have been put into the website. I started taking photos of the Heathers at the Royal Horticultural Society at Wisley garden. I have displayed the Heathers foliage in closeup since their leaves are 2mm long and in macro-scale in the Heather Galleries - sometimes the foliage colour at the terminal end of the foliage stem is only a few leaves, whereas others have the same foliage colour throughout the stem. I discovered that some of the heathers did not have the correct plant label, since the flower colour did not correspond with the flower colour in the literature. I was informed that since kids have free rein, that perhaps they move the plant labels. Since, I cannot rely that the heather plant label next to the heather plant is valid, I have stopped taking photos of those heathers.
This leaves a small problem, especially since very few gardens open to the public have their plants labelled so that the public can use the data on their label to buy that named plant from a nursery or garden centre. Currently (June 2018) I insert photos from Wikimedia Commons as well as my own.
I have found the above book - which does not contain any colour plant photos. Since it had the following experts help in creating it, I have decided to use its information in these 10 galleries to help the public:-

• T.W. Sanders Editor of Amateur Gardening in 1895.
• A.J Macself Editor of Amateur Gardening in 1926 - both Sanders and Macself had worked entirely to the handlists published by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew
• A.G.L. Hellyer in this work of revision and also in checking the all-important cultural notes sought the help of experts in the various classes of plant:-
  • Mr S.A. Pearce, Assistant Curator at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew undertook the revision of those genera of plants which in this country are mainly grown under glass.
  • Mr Will Ingwersen dealt with the Rock plants,
  • Mr N. Catchpole made himself responsible for trees and shrubs;
  • Mr G.A Phillips for herbaceous plants,
  • Mrs Francis Perry for water plants,
  • Mr A.J. Macself for ferns,
  • Mr E. Cooper for orchids,
  • Mr J.S Dakers for annuals,
  • Miss Doreen Crowther for fruit and vegetables

with the aid of further information from other books, magazines and cross-checking on the internet.
In this edition of the book Sander's Encyclopaedia, the individual soil mixtures to grow plants have been retained, for it was considered that many gardeners might still wish to use them in certain circumstances. The John Innes mixtures may be substituted wherever desired. Details of these individual mixtures will be put into these galleries.
