"Nature’s plan is to build up the humus year after year and this can only be done by organic matter. There is need to replace and return that which has been taken out. The Chinese, who are the best gardeners, collect, ‘use’, and return to the soil, every possible kind of waste, vegetable, animal and human. In over 4000 years of intensive cultivation they still support more human beings per hectare than any other country in the world! On the other hand in areas like the Middle West of the U.S.A. And the Regina Plain of Canada, where the Wheel of Life has not been recognized, tens of thousands of hectares which once grew heavy crops are now useless, or practically so.

Every flower crop grown reduces the organic content of the ground. Every piece of work done helps to break down the humus. The value of the soil in your garden, therefore, is not the mica particles or grains of sand. It lies in the humus that the soil contains. Humus makes all the difference to successful gardening. Have plenty of humus present and the soil is in good tilth. Humus is the organic colloid of the soil. It can store water, it can store plant foods, it can help to keep the soil open. It can help to ensure the right aeration. It will give ideal insulation against heat and cold.

Using Compost

Garden owners proposing to dig their land shallowly in preparation for flower growing, should realize the importance of adding ample quantities of organic matter before they start. Composted farmyard manure, fine wool shoddy, properly composted vegetable refuse, or hop manure should be added at the rate of one good barrow-load to 10 m2 (12 sq yds) and in addition into the top 25 or 50 mm (1 or 2 in) of soil finely divided sedge peat, non-acid in character should be raked in at about half a bucketful (9 litres) per square metre (2 gallons per sq yd). This organic matter in the top few millimetres of soil gives the little roots a good start and so sends them on to find the organic matter below.

It is when the organic content of the soil has been helped in this way, that the gardener dares to add plant foods of an organic origin. These are usually applied on the surface of the ground and raked in. Fertilizers with an organic base are particularly useful. Fish Manure may be applied at 105 to 140 g/m2 (3 oz to 4 oz per sq yd), or a meat and bone meal or even hoof and horn meal mixed with equal quantities of wood ashes may be used at a similar rate. These plant foods can be supplied not only when the flower garden is first made but every season very early in the spring. A good dried poultry manure to which a little potash has been added is another fertilizer that is very useful when applied at this time.

Minimum Digging

Flower growers must realize that proper soil treatment is the first essential to success. The millions and millions of soil bacteria that live in the ground to help the gardener, much appreciate little or no digging. It enables them to work better, for they need conditions which are natural. So do give them what they need.

Liming

Lime should be regarded as an essential except in very definite cases where acidity is demanded, e.g. the heaths and heathers, rhododendrons and azaleas.

Lime not only prevents soil from being acid but it ‘sweetens’ it, as well as playing its part as a plant food. It improves the texture and workability of heavy soils. It helps to release other plant foods, and it decomposes organic compounds in the soil so that they can be used as plant food also.

Generally speaking it should be applied at about 245 g/m2 (7 oz per sq yd). It should not be dug in, as it washes down into the soil very quickly. It should be sprinkled on the surface of the ground after the digging and manuring has been done. Do not mix lime with organic fertilizers. There are three main types of lime: Quicklime, sometimes sold as Buxton Lime or Lump Lime, which has to be slaked down on the soil; Chalk or Limestone, often sold as Ground Limestone, only half as valuable as quicklime; and Hydrated Lime, which is perhaps the most convenient j to handle and is therefore most usually used by gardeners. The quantity of lime mentioned previously i.e. 245 g/m2 (7 oz per sq yd), refers to hydrated lime."

In planning your beds for your garden, before the vertical hard-landscaping framework and the vertical speciman planting is inserted into your soft landscaping plan, the following is useful to consider:-
1. The ground plan usually depends upon 1 or more unalterable existing features. The position of the doors of the house will dictate the positions of paths, the shortest route to the kitchen may indicate the best place for a paved area for eating and drinking out of doors, or the kept trees/shrubs may indicate what garden style is used.
2. Rules of Proportion -
A. A border should be roughly 1/2 as wide as the hedge or wall behind it.
B. The proportion of planted areas to paved or turfed areas should be 1/3 to 2/3, or a 1/4 to 3/4, not 1/2 and 1/2.
C. Within a bed or border, unless a 2-dimensional pattern on the ground is the objective, the height and bulk of the plants should be varied to avoid monotony; it is particularly important to provide strong planting, in terms of either height or bulk or both, at either end of a long bed.
D. The ground surface provides a background to the plants that is as important as the hedges, walls or fences that surround it. Grass is perhaps the most satisfying carpet to use, the cool green forming a restful antidote to the dancing colours of the flowers. Use different coloured pea-shingle inside Cedar Gravel for people in wheelchairs, or infirm in their legs or who suffer from Hay Fever.

STAGE 4C CULTIVATION, POSITION, USE GALLERY

Since 2006, I have requested photos etc from the Mail-Order Nurseries in the UK and later from the rest of the World. Few nurseries have responded.
I worked for a lady, who with her husband took 35 mm slides of plants in the 1960's and 1970's. She allowed me to digitise some of her Kodachrome slides, which I have used in my website. I discovered that at least the green colour of the foliage became very much darker over that period of years to 2008, by comparing wildflower photos from her slides with digital photos supplied by a current Wildflower mail-order nursery, so I stopped creating my Foliage Galleries.
I bought myself a camera some years ago and started taking photos, some of which have been put into the website. I started taking photos of the Heathers at the Royal Horticultural Society at Wisley garden. I have displayed the Heathers foliage in closeup since their leaves are 2mm long and in macro-scale in the Heather Galleries - sometimes the foliage colour at the terminal end of the foliage stem is only a few leaves, whereas others have the same foliage colour throughout the stem. I discovered that some of the heathers did not have the correct plant label, since the flower colour did not correspond with the flower colour in the literature. I was informed that since kids have free rein, that perhaps they move the plant labels. Since, I cannot rely that the heather plant label next to the heather plant is valid, I have stopped taking photos of those heathers.
This leaves a small problem, especially since very few gardens open to the public have their plants labelled so that the public can use the data on their label to buy that named plant from a nursery or garden centre. Currently (June 2018) I insert photos from Wikimedia Commons as well as my own.
I have found the above book - which does not contain any colour plant photos. Since it had the following experts help in creating it, I have decided to use its information in these 10 galleries to help the public:-

  • T.W. Sanders Editor of Amateur Gardening in 1895.
  • A.J Macself Editor of Amateur Gardening in 1926 - both Sanders and Macself had worked entirely to the handlists published by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew
  • A.G.L. Hellyer in this work of revision and also in checking the all-important cultural notes sought the help of experts in the various classes of plant:-
    • Mr S.A. Pearce, Assistant Curator at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew undertook the revision of those genera of plants which in this country are mainly grown under glass.
    • Mr Will Ingwersen dealt with the Rock plants,
    • Mr N. Catchpole made himself responsible for trees and shrubs;
    • Mr G.A Phillips for herbaceous plants,
    • Mrs Francis Perry for water plants,
    • Mr A.J. Macself for ferns,
    • Mr E. Cooper for orchids,
    • Mr J.S Dakers for annuals,
    • Miss Doreen Crowther for fruit and vegetables

with the aid of further information from other books, magazines and cross-checking on the internet.
In this edition of the book Sander's Encyclopaedia, the individual soil mixtures to grow plants have been retained, for it was considered that many gardeners might still wish to use them in certain circumstances. The John Innes mixtures may be substituted wherever desired. Details of these individual mixtures will be put into these galleries.

The Propagation of Alpines by Lawrence D. Hills. Published in 1950 by Faber and Faber Limited describes every method of propagation for 2,500 species. Unlike modern books published since 1980, this one states exactly what to do and is precisely what you require if you want to increase your alpines.

The following comes from Shrubs and Trees for the Smaller Garden by Frances Perry. Published by C. Arthur Pearson Ltd in 1961.

The Soil
If choice were possible the ideal soil for shrubs would be a deep and fertile loam, slightly acid and light enough for easy working.
Normally the preparation of the border will follow certain rules, regardless of the type of soil. Clearance of the site is a necessary prelimary;

  • tree stumps, roots and bad weeds must be removed and
  • the ground turned over to a depth of 2 spits (approximately 20 inches = 50 cms) if possible.

Failing this, deep planting holes must be taken out for each plant and filled with good compost ( if nothing else, use John Innes no 3). Trees and shrubs are very permanent, they may remain a lifetime in the same spot, so that adequate, preliminary preparation is not only sensible but essential. In later years it will not be possible to dig deeply in their vicinity or provide manures at root level, and so plenty of organic material - rotted dung, compost, spent hops or peat - should be incorporated in the oil during the initial preparations.

Unfortunately in my experience of visiting client's gardens of houses built within the 22 years between 1991 and 2013, most of the topsoil had been removed and sold for the builder's profit and either replaced with rubble from the building with a turf layer on top or just the turf layer on top of the subsoil, which was usually clay or sometimes chalk/flint. Thus there was no depth of topsoil for plants to go in as I noted that thousands of shrubs/trees had died after 1 year at a new retirement site because of the 2 inch depth (5 cms) depth of topsoil on 72 inch depth of brick rubble from the school buildings that were there before. I have made some suggestions in Case 3b - Pre-building Work for Builders with Polluted Soil. Even if they increased the depth to 20 inches (50 cms) instead of 12 (30 cms) with my suggested mixture, it would still leave the new owners with more and more of the old owners with no water as there is at present overabstraction and so within 10 years there will not the water as is happening in India. It is good of the goverment to perform slow euthanasia on its population throughout the county as no new water reservoirs are planned for Medway area to use for the 25,000 more houses by 2035. We had not only impending drought but drought levels of groundwater in 2017 in Medway where our water is taken from aquifers for Medway authority area.

The best soil structure is shown above and microaggregates can bond together with others into larger units called 'aggregates'. You need all the above including the organic matter to create soil. If microaggregates do not have a continuing supply of organic matter, then they will break up so that soil particles simply return to being sand, silt or clay.

HUMUS - The product of decayed and decaying plants and animals; humus or 'organic matter' is the magic ingredient which gives fertility to the soil. Humus improves the structure of the soil, making it dark brown and crumbly. It holds moisture without impeding drainage and is home to a wide range of bacteria and other micro-organisms that help the gardener by breaking down organic matter to release nutrients. Earthworms thrive in humus-rich soils, and their movement through the soil aids drainage and aeration. The proportion of humus to mineral particles varies in different soils. It can be added to poor soil in the form of well rotted manure, compost or leaf mould.
WATER - Entering the soil by precipitation (rain and snowfall), by absorption upwards from the water table underground and by seepage from rivers, lakes and ponds. Water is lost from the soil through natural drainage, through evaporation and through plants taking it up through their roots. Plants need access to water for the food-making process of photosynthesis.
AIR - Plants breathe through their roots, using the air trapped between the particles of rock and humus. Without air, soil becomes waterlogged suffocating most plant roots. The living organisms in the soil, on which plants depend, also need air.

The Soil Textural Triangle shows what the soil is named according to the % of Clay, Sand or Silt in it.
The worst textures are those sections named Clay, Sand, Loamy Sand and Silt Loam. They need either sand or clay to be added to them.

Clay Soils
These are heavy to work, cold, retentive of moisture and slow to dry out in spring. They are liable to crack in summer but fertile and capable of growing good plants when properly worked, especially members of the rose family. Clay particles are the smallest of the mineral types and pack down tightly, thus hampering drainage which is further impaired by the peculiar colloidal nature of this soil. Every particle of clay is surrounded by a film of jelly-like substance known as a colloid. When abundant moisture is present these expand like sponges, pressing the particles even more tightly together, but under drought conditions they lose water and shrink and then cracks appear. This characteristic enables clays to retain moisture for a considerable time so that they dry out less rapidly in summer than the lighter kinds, but it creates working difficulties in wet weather. That colloidal property may be destroyed by burning (e.g. a clay pot or brick), and at one time burnt clay was worked into heavy land, but this technique has been abandoned because of high cost. If the brick buildings which have been demolished on the building site before building the new buildings were crushed instead and applied as a 2 inch (5 cms) mulch on the exposed clay soil, then that land could be improved. If this crushed brick is applied to the land after being built, then wait a year if that land has been manured otherwise ammonia is created by the reaction between it and the brick and you lose a lot of the nitrogen that the manure was applied for in the first place. Again do not apply manure until a year after mulching the ground with the crushed brick. Attempts to improve heavy clay soil aim at increasing the drainage (I have broadcast sand over a cut lawn, which was laid on clay, once a month for 3 months - result the lawn did not squelch after heavy rain after that treatment). In very wet land it may be necessary to install drains, but on no account should the soil be WORKED whilst wet, as this deflocculates the clay and makes it stickier than ever. Attempts to hold the minute particles apart are encouraged by working in plenty of peat, leaf-soil or similar organic material, whilst sand, grit or weathered ashes may also be used at discretion to make cultivation easier.

Sandy Soils
Sandy soils are the antithesis of clays. The particles are larger and have no colloids. They are easy to work, soon dry out and warm up early in the year. In the main they are composed of silica which is practically indestructible and totally devoid of plant food. Too high a proportion of sand (40 % and over) renders a soil infertile, for drainage is so free that all the soluble plant foods are washed away. Treatment consists of adding plenty of organic manure to bind the particles together, thus creating a reserve of manurial matter and increasing the retentive power of the soil to hold water and mineral salts.
If lime must be added, marl or chalk will prove more economical than quick or hydrated lime for they are slower acting. Nitrogen should be given in an organic form (dung, guano, etc) as the artificial forms soon wash away. Potash is usually in short supply and any plants showing signs of deficiency (leaf-scorch) should receive applications of sulphate of potash or Kainite. Plants which must have good drainage often thrive in sandy soils where they fail entirely in clay. You can buy ceramic "baking beans" to use in blind-baking. If the excess clay on a building site was made into the same shape and size as ceramic "baking beans" and sold in 1 Kg bags in garden centres, then the public could buy them and scatter them on their lawns and flower beds (they are that small that the lawn mower would not catch them). The rain would dissolve them and that would change the texture of their sandy soil and make it more moisture retentive.

Chalky Soils
Like the sandy types, calcareous soils are warm, dry and well-drained and the water capacity is low: they are also notoriously weedy. Their fertility depends to a large extent on the depth of soil overlaying the chalk or limestone foundation.
Organic material is quickly lost and needs constant replacement; accordingly mulches are beneficial as they prevent drying out and form a food reserve during the summer months. When nitrogen is required sulphate of ammonia gives quick results and because of the amount of calcium carbonate available is utilized to the full. Chalk soils are usually rich in phosphate but potash is naturally lacking. Kainite is the best form in which to apply the latter. Again clay could be applied in the same way as in Sandy Soils.

Peat Soils
Peat is composed of excessive quantities of organic material - mostly plant remains - which have not broken down into simple salts because of the waterlogged conditions. This prevents the soil bacteria from working. The first essential is to drain the land, after which sand and grit should be worked in to encourage aeration. Lime serves to neutralize the prevailing acid conditions and encourages nitrification (the breakdown of organic material). It can be used with discretion except where calcifuges or lime haters are to grow.

 

ADDING LIME TO SOIL
Quantity of hydrated lime necessary to correct varying degrees of acidity on soils of different types. All figures are for ounces per square yard (square yard = 36 x 36 inches). Loam is a mixture of clay, sand and humus. The ideal loam as a basis for potting composts will contain enough sand to keep the soil open and enough clay to prevent it drying out rapidly.

LOAM
Good loam always contains a considerable quantity of fibre provided by the dead or decaying roots of grasses and other small plants. This fibre helps to maintain the open texture of the loam and when loam is being prepared for potting composts great care should be taken not to remove all the fibre from it by sieving it too finely. Loam which differs considerably from this ideal, may be described by qualifying adjectives such as

  • light loam, meaning one containing a high proportion of sand;
  • heavy loam, containing a high proportion of clay, and
  • fibrous loam, containing an unusual amount of fibre.
  • The term chalky loam, is sometimes employed, but this type of soil is more correctly referred to as marl.

Loam is usually cut from the top spit of meadows in 1960. The turves should be stacked grass-side downwards in a heap and allowed to remain for at least 12 months, so that the grass may decay. Stacked loam will remain in good condition for a number of years, particularly if the stack is built with a ridged top to throw off rain.

Season of Planting
As a general rule deciduous trees and shrubs should be transplanted whilst in a leafless or dormant state, and evergreens about the time growth commences. In practice this means early spring or autumn for the former and around April with the latter.
New plants arriving in frosty weather should be taken to a shed and have the roots unpacked and covered with dry soil.
Get your new trees or shrubs into the ground as soon as the waether lets up, taking out a planting hole which looks considerably bigger than you will need! Fork over the bottom, add a little peat (if you cannot get peat or leaf-soil, use John Innes No 3 instead) or leaf-soil and spread the roots out carefully so that they radiate outwards and downwards from the centre (for trees or shrubs in pots then tease out the roots before planting as stated in the last sentence. If you do not do this the plant will continue to grow its roots until they have taken all the space between them and within 10 years that plant will die from dehydration and lack of nutrients as I found out to my cost on a blue cedar). Roots that have been damaged in transit should always be trimmed first. Now return the soil, a little at a timr. The latter should be friable and specially prepared if necessary, and from time to time made firm by treading. Shake the bush occasionally as the work proceeds to let the finer particles sift in amongst the roots.
The finished result should show the soil slightly higher than the surrounding land - it always settles a little - and the tree or shrub set to the old planting level. If it is too shallow the roots (unless heavily mulched) will be exposed to drying winds or frost and if too deep they will not obtain sufficient air and the basal buds (which renew the branches of many kinds) refuse to grow. This particularly important with rhododendrons and azaleas.
Evergreens are always lifted with a ball of soil enclosing the main root system. It is important to keep this intact, so very careful firming and gentle handling is necessary. It is possible to move evergreens ant time if sufficient soil is left on the roots and enough care paid to watering. I have moved rhododendrons successfully in July and August without the leaves flagging (I have also moved a 72 inch (180 cms) diameter rhododendron in flower from 1 garden to the next door one without the leaves flagging or the flowers falling off).

Staking
Young standard trees and top-heavy shrubs will probably need suppot for a year or two until they become established. A stake set at 45 degrees and attached to the trunk about 12 inches (30 cms) from the ground will prevent that plant from being pulled out of the ground by the wind, but still allow that tree to develop strengt in its trunk to stop it snapping when the stake is removed. It should be attached by wrapping a piece of hessian round the bark and tying the trunk/stake together with soft string/ green twine. If you use plastic twine or metal wire then after you have forgotten it the trunk will snap off above that tye.

Planting distances
Groups of shrubs, or mixed borders should be considered from 2 angles

  • present appearance and
  • the ultimate effect.

It is obvious that 'fill-ups' will be required for a few years, perhaps plants of a temporary nature, in order to present a more pleasing picture while the permanent specimens are taking hold. You could use ground cover plants.

Mulching and Watering
Enrichment of the soil around shrubs is best achieved by the natural method - from an annual mulch of leaves. Mow your lawn or your pavement where street trees have dropped their leaves and apply a 4 inch (10 cms) depth of the cut leaves and grass mowings to your beds and hedges.
In other districts bracken can be cut, either chopping this up for spreading amongst smaller shrubs or laying the fronds directly on the soil. Bracken for mulching should be cut in June, for it is then at its richest, containing amongst other things considerable quantities of potash. For the rest, spent hops or rotted straw can be used. The latter is converted to excellent organic material by the following method. Spread a 6 inch (15 cms) layeron a firm piece of ground and soak with water. Now sprinkle the heap with dried blood (about 2 ounces to the square yard), add more straw, soak again and continue in this way until the heap is about 48 inches (120 cms) high. Spread a little dry soil or sand over the top.
Keep the heap moist and after 6 months (3 in a warm season) it will be ready to break up and spread around the shrubs.
An annual mulch of this nature not only nourishes the plants but keeps the ground beneath cool and moist. It also smothers seedling weeds, and so avoids the need for constant hoeing.
The first year after planting shrubs and trees may require an occasional watering. Never play with the watering-can, however; give the plants a good drink or none at all. A dribble of moisture may discourage roots from going down and by bringing them to the surface do more harm than good.
Conifers and evergreens, however, derive considerable benefit from foliage sprays. Use soft water for preference and syringe the leaves in the early morning or evening. Such sprays counter-act excessive transpiration losses and prevent leaf dropping with young, insecurely anchored plants. Soak the ground in the last month of the summer like August in the UK for the trees and shrubs to store the water for their spring creation of new leaves. Soak the ground again in April to provide the water for the spring and summer growth. If it has a 4 inch depth of organic mulch in the spring, then that water will be sufficient for those trees/shrubs over that spring/summer period.

Hints on Cultivation

  • Avoid digging close tp shrubs as many carry their feeding roots near the surface to the edge of the drip-line of the tree/shrub - "The dripline is the area directly located under the outer circumference of the tree branches. When the tree canopy gets wet, any excess is shed to the ground along this dripline, much like an umbrella. This is also known as a tree’s Critical Root Zone (CRZ), sometimes also called the Root Protection Zone (RPZ), and is defined as a circle on the ground corresponding to the dripline of the tree. The most active water absorption area is at the dripline and beyond, not close to the center or trunk. This is where the tiny terminal feeder rootlets are located that take up water and nutrients from the soil for the tree. Trees should be watered here, not by the base of the trunk, or the tree may develop root rot."
  • Hoe the top of the mulch to destroy weed seedlings. most mulches will prevent weeds from germinating.
  • Grass mowings may be used for mulching providing they do not shrub/tree stems. Rhododendrons especially can be badly burnt by rotting fresh grass. I do not apply more than 0.5 inch (1 cm) depth of grass mowings every fortnight to the same ground since the first fornight is taken up by aerobic decomposition which heats up the grass and then anaerobic decomposition occurs which does not use air and is a cold form of decomposition.
  • Always label your shrubs, trees and roses. Memories are not infallible and naming varietal forms may tax all but the specialist - see the sameness of some of the 720 roses in the Rose Galleries.
  • Trees in grass should have rings of soil left round the trunks for at least 5 years extending to their drip-line or at least 48 inches (120 cms) radius from their trunk. Plant these with crocus and Cyclamen neapolitanum for added interest in spring and autumn.   • Keep a sharp lookout for pests and act at the first sign of trouble - you could use companion planting like Pest Control using Plants .
  • Pay regular winter visits to newly planted trees and shrubs which tend to lift from the ground in a thaw, expoing the roots to the next frost visitation. Most winter casualties are caused by this fact. Grasp the stem firmly and tread the soil down hard all round with the foot.
