Comment |
Clump-forming Form. Pruning Group 14. "Succulent, grey-green leaves, topped with large, flat heads of bright pinkish-mauve flowers in summer. This award-winning ice plant looks great planted in bold drifts towards the front of a sunny, well-drained border. A valuable late source of nectar for butterflies and bees, the flat flowerheads make attractive dried-flowers. The flowerheads look great left during the winter to add shape and texture to your border. In February and March cut back the old flowerheads and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant. Once established, sedums can have a tendency to flop leaving an open and unsightly centre, especially in fertile soil. One technique to help prevent this is the 'Chelsea chop'. During the last week of May (RHS Chelsea Flower Show week), cut one in every three stems back to the ground. This will produce plants that are less lush and flower slightly later." from Crocus. "Great late-summer/autumn nectar source for bees, butterflies etc., great wine-coloured flower heads, loves the sun but tolerates some shade quite happily, doesn't mind being dry as it's a succulent, suffers no obvious pests and is easy as pie to propagate – if you give the plant the 'Chelsea chop' it makes it shorter and bushier later in the year, though with smaller flowers, and you can just pot up the prunings from this in the greenhouse and they'll root like nobody's business if you keep them well-drained. Accidentally overwatered my cuttings taken this way this year, so they rotted at the base, but still wasn't a disaster as noticed they were putting out rootlets from every leaf junction – so I carefully separated each individual leaf with new roots, laid these on a seed tray full of gritty compost and off they went again until I had a tray full of 9" young plants to plant out. A great, undemanding and useful space filler." from Velvet Android. " 'Brilliant' is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial to 45cm in height, with thick stems and broadly elliptic, grey-green leaves and flat terminal cymes of dark-centred, bright pink flowers from late summer. Grow in moderately fertile, well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil in full sun. A drought-tolerant plant" from Royal Horticultural Society. Available from Crocus and Gardeners World in the UK with Perennial Resource in America and Nutshell Perennial Nursery & Plant Farm in Australia. |

HERBACEOUS PERENNIAL INDEX -
The variety of plants that can be used in alpine gardening is obviously very large and very bewildering at first approach. With a view to easing the task of selection here are lists The standard potting and seed-soil recipes from The Propagation of Alpines by Lawrence D.
