Plant Name |
Origanum laevigatum 'Herrenhausen' The variety 'Herrenhausen' is named after the 17th-century Baroque garden near Hanover, Germany. This lavish, formal garden was developed by Electress Sophia (1630-1714), who was the granddaughter of James I of England and mother of George I of England. The castle at Herrenhausen had a very productive vegetable and fruit garden, to feed the household, and there is still a botanic garden on the site today. |

Comment |
Erect Form. Pruning Group 14. "This cultivar is grown primarily for its attractive foliage and flowers. A rhizomatous, upright to sprawling, woody-based subshrub which typically grows 12-18" tall and spreads to 24" wide, but dies to the ground in cold winters. Stems root at the notes as they go along the ground. Features aromatic, oval, green to reddish-purple leaves (to 1" long) on contrasting red stems. Leaves deepen in color as the summer progresses, with the best purple colors usually occurring in cool climates. Tiny, deep rose-violet flowers with reddish-purple bracts appear in dense, terminal or axillary spikes in summer. Easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soil in full sun. Good heat and drought tolerance. May not be reliably winter hardy throughout USDA Zone 5." from Missouri Botanical Garden. "The foliage is only slightly aromatic. But it is highly decorative and bees and gatekeeper butterflies actively seek it out in August in my garden, in preference to other plants - for the nectar of all oreganums is highly concentrated. Origanum vulgare, or marjoram, has the most concentrated sugar-rich nectar of any plant, containing a record 76 per cent sugar. 'Herrenhausen' seems to be just as attractive to bees. Hoverflies are also drawn to the small flowers, which are ideal for their tiny mouth parts. So this is an excellent plant for a sunny place near the vegetable garden. It will pull in hoverflies (their larvae are highly efficient predators of aphids and other pests) and please the pollinators. There are about 20 species of origanum found in open, sunny positions in the Mediterranean region and south-western Asia. Most form low-growing mounds of aromatic foliage. Origanum laevigatum is a more upright, slender plant, reaching 60cm (24in), and it's found naturally in Syria and Turkey.. Although I think 'Herrenhausen' is the best form of Origanum laevigatum, there are other good varieties on offer. 'Hopleys' is daintier, airier and pinker. The hybrid 'Rosenkuppel' is taller with wine-red flowers. There is also a new, larger-flowered form called 'Purple Charm'. All will shine in August, usually the most difficult month in the garden, adding sparkle to a sunny border." from The Telegraph.

"The vertical stance of 'Herrenhausen' mingles well with the small, pale-lemon daisies of Anthemis tinctoria 'Sauce Hollandaise' at the sunny front of a border. Or you can exploit its sultry dark looks by growing it among silver foliage. Let it pop up through the chrysanthemum-like leaves of Artemisia stelleriana 'Boughton Silver'. Add a dark-leaved sedum (like 'Vera Jameson') to the sun-loving trio. You could also try other silver-leaved plants such as ballotas, helianthemums (rock roses), santolinas, lavenders and variegated white and green thyme. Soften the vertical stance with arching grasses like the fluffy, wool-white Pennisetum villosum and the golden barley-headed Hordeum jubatum. Both work well but each should be treated as an annual. The dark strappy foliage of the low-growing perennial Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens' also works well and the lilac-mauve berries pick up the colour of Herrenhausen's flowers." from The Telegraph. |

This section details what I consider as errors in design carried out by the staff at the RHS garden in Wisley:-
Mixing all the primary colours together for the flower colours used in many of the 71 parts of these Mixed Borders This mixture provides a foliage and flower foil against which these other permanent herbaceous perennials can provide new growth from the ground each year, with the different colours of foliage from juvenile to mature to dying off in the autumn and then an easy maintenance during the months of December-March for removing most of the growth above ground and replacing the plant supports to provide a neat bed in a series of large ground areas. The bedding plants - see Bedding Annual Plant Index and Un-labelled Bedding Annual Plant Index pages - provide the icing on the cake at different flowering time periods between May and November to enhance the overall flower colour scheme. The new bedding each year can provide opportunities to vary the look of these beds. It was disapointing that I did not see the flowers during 2013 of more than 25% of these Permanent Herbaceous Perennial Plants - possible reasons shown in Lost Flowers Page with 'Walkabout' Plants and 'Stateless' Plants Page. A table for each month - May, June, July, August, September, October, November - shows the flower photos for each of the 71 parts of the Mixed Borders split into Blue, Orange, Pink, Red, Unusual Colour, White, or Yellow for all the plants. Besides that, you can see from the table below that Red and Pink with Unusual Flower Colours seem to be predominant as flower colours and that these are spread throughout the beds.
I have added the BEDding (started January 2014 - completed March 2014) and then the OTHer Permanent Plants (started March 2014 - completed May 2014) to the table below to show the flower colour planting scheme of the Bedding and the Other Permanent Plants and then its combination.
If I had produced this planting design with its mixture of flower colours in almost every part - or maintained these beds in this way - in 2013, I would be deeply ashamed. As a nation of gardeners in Britain; the Royal Horticultural Society being at its pinnacle, with the tradition of excellence by our previous head gardeners and their staff during the Victorian era, I had thought that the staff at the RHS Garden at Wisley would not need a lecture.
Another Possible Solution for lack of coordinated Flower Colour Scheme If you want the garden to be restful to the eye, then you can provide a colour scheme using the harmony of adjacent colours. If you prefer to shock the visitor, then use the contrast of opposite colours, but I am not favourable of the above partial use of the harmony of triads as shown by the Colour Wheel Page of Garden Design.
Very Poor Plant Labelling After reviewing the situation that 102 plants were missing their identity when in flower in 2013 out of 348 (29.31% of the plants) in 768 square metres of Mixed Borders garden beds:-
