If you are looking for specialist nurseries or garden centres in the UK our plant finder comes complete with an easy to use A-Z list of garden plants that makes finding plants for sale online easy. To help with plant identification we include many photographs and individual plant descriptions.

Once you have found the plant you are looking for we provide easy access to growers and nurseries who have these species for sale, many with mail order or 'online' buying facilities

There are a great number of colours of green, but other colours of foliage are available (See the 212 foliage colours in Foliage Colour Wheel). Sometimes the foliage colour changes from season to season (See the same foliage colours in Spring Foliage, Summer Foliage, Autumn Foliage and Winter Foliage Colour Wheels) and the effect of the mass of foliage colour is usually greater than the effect of flowers during a shorter time.

You can use the change in colour to accentuate a particular flower colour scheme at the change of the seasons in a dramatic way, and it is worth considering this aspect of colour in a garden. It is probably better to have green as your base colour with some other colours of foliage frugally put in, such as 3 purple trees/shrubs in the whole garden. Please do not mix variegated yellow/green, with variegated white/green etc as it looks as if the sweet shop man has spilt his gobstoppers in your garden!!!

It is worth remembering that when deciduous trees change the colour of their leaves in the autumn, that all those leaves may fall off the tree within a couple of weeks after changing colour.

The Gallery sections of this website contain thumbnail and larger colour photographs of the foliage split into:-

  • different colours
  • summer and autumn foliage if different colour and
  • 4 season colours if different colour in more than 2 seasons.

The Hardy Plant Society Variegated Plants Group of the UK will extend your appreciation of the very wide range of available plants and the effects which can be achieved by using them in the garden.
