Botany of a peony from bud to seed with photos and view into the future of peony breeding with peony cutting from the beginning to the end.

Chalky alkaline soils are derived from chalk or limestone with a pH of 7.1 or above.
Clay soils swell and shrink as they wet and dry.
Lime-Free soils are acidic and without chalk.

In poorly drained soils (50 % solid materials and about 50 % pore space), most of the pore space is filled with water for long periods of time, leaving too little air.

Light sandy soils dry out quickly and are low in nutrients.

Acid Site - An acid soil has a pH value below 7.0. Clay soils are usually acid and retentive of moisture, requiring drainage. The addition of grit or coarse sand makes them more manageable.

Peaty soil is acidic with fewer nutrients and also requires drainage.

Alkaline Soil - An alkaline soil has a pH value above 7.0. Soils that form a thin layer over chalk restrict plant selection to those tolerant of drought.

Tree peonies can be grown successfully for several years in a container about 30cm in diameter. When planting, it is important to use a soil-based compost such as John Innes No.3. Do not overwater.

Herbaceous peonies are toxic to deer and rabbits and are generally immune to damage. Tree peonies are eaten by deer and rabbits.

Companion Plants to help you plan your late spring or early summer garden, Gardenia provides some plant combinations.

I have completed 50 of the peonies in this index (35 of them with no photos and no peony description page and 10 with photos but the peony description pages have not been created yet).
I have diverted my attentions to which plants to use in what soils in the Plants topic and when I have completed the insertion of the plant names into the chalk, clay and sand pages
I will return to this gallery (9 November 2017) to complete its entries,
before I return later to complete the insertion of the remainder of each plants details in the Plants Topic.

"The peony is named after Paeon (also spelled Paean), a student of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine and healing. Asclepius became jealous of his pupil; Zeus saved Paeon from the wrath of Asclepius by turning him into the peony flower.

Most of the more than 3,000 peonies available are herbaceous perennial plants 0.5–1.5 metres (1.6–4.9 ft) tall, but some resemble trees 1.5–3 metres (4.9–9.8 ft) tall.

Herbaceous peonies such as Paeonia lactiflora, will die back to ground level each autumn. Their stems will reappear the following spring.

However tree peonies, such as Paeonia suffruticosa, are shrubbier. They produce permanent woody stems that will lose their leaves in winter but the stem itself remains intact above ground level. " from Wikipedia.

"Peonies will grow in most garden soils as long as they are not too acid or waterlogged during the winter." from Martin Page in creating "The Peony Society" website. Peonies love moist and rich organic nutritious soil.

"According to some estimates, there are over 3,000 cultivated varieties of peony - a fairly comprehensive list is available at Carsten Burkhardt's Web Project Paeonia."

Surface soil moisture is the water that is in the upper 10 cm (4 inches) of soil, whereas root zone soil moisture is the water that is available to plants, which is generally considered to be in the upper 200 cm (80 inches) of soil:-

  • Wet Soil has Saturated water content of 20-50% water/soil and is Fully saturated soil
  • Moist Soil has Field capacity of 10-35% water/soil and is Soil moisture 2–3 days after a rain or irrigation
  • Dry Soil has Permanent wilting point of 1-25% water/soil and is Minimum soil moisture at which a plant wilts
  • Residual water content of 0.1-10% water/soil and is Remaining water at high tension
  • Available Water Capacity for plants is the difference between water content at field capacity and permanent wilting point

Sun Aspect:-

  • Full Sun: At least 6 full hours of direct sunlight. Many sun lovers enjoy more than 6 hours per day, but need regular water to endure the heat.
  • Part Shade: 3 - 6 hours of sun each day, preferably in the morning and early afternoon. The plant will need some relief from the intense late afternoon sun, either from shade provided by a nearby tree or planting it on the east side of a building.
Dappled Sun - DS in Part Shade Column: Dappled sunlight is similar to partial shade. It is the sun that makes its way through the branches of a deciduous tree. Woodland plants and underplantings prefer this type of sunlight over even the limited direct exposure they would get from partial shade.
  • Full Shade: Less than 3 hours of direct sunlight each day, with filtered sunlight during the rest of the day. Full shade does not mean no sun.

The overall amount of sunlight received depends on aspect, the direction your garden faces:-

  • North-facing gardens get the least light and can be damp.
  • South-facing gardens get the most light.
  • East-facing gardens get morning light.
  • West-facing gardens get afternoon and evening light.

Sun Aspect, Soil Type, Soil Moisture, Plant Type and Height of Plant are used in the Plant Photo Galleries in the comparison of thumbnail photos.

From the Plant Expert:-
"Species - There are somewhere between 35 and 50 different species of peony (i.e. plants belonging to the genus Paeonia). However, most of these botanical species grow wild in Asia, southern Europe, or western North America. Very few of them are culivated and sold commercially. The few that are available are usually not as large and showy as the peonies we see growing in neighbourhood gardens. When the term "species peony" is used by a nursery or commercial grower, it basically means: "wild peony which we've 'captured' and made available to you non-explorers because you want something rare and different". While they are rare, and different from most garden peonies, they are also not as spectacular bloomers.

Herbaceous peony- The species of peony which is probably most important commercially is the Paeonia lactiflora. This species is native to central and eastern Asia. In particular, it occurs in northern China, and has been cultivated there for perhaps 1,600 years. There are at least 3,000 registered cultivars (i.e. cultivated varieties) of Paeonia lactiflora (and probably even more which have never been registered or marketed). Most of the peonies sold commercially are either culivars of Paeonia lactiflora, or else hybrids, with some of its genes.
Lactiflora Cultivars vs. Herbaceous hybrids - Historically, most varieties of peony sold were cultivars of P. lactiflora. However, these varieties often didn't have strong enough stems to hold the large blossoms upright. As a result, most of the lactiflora cultivars needed staking. In response to this, the newer herbaceous hybrid peonies were developed. These have stronger stems, so that staking isn't needed. However, herbaceous hybrids aren't floriferous; that is, they usually don't have side buds — they typically produce only one bud per stem.
Cultivars of Paeonia lactiflora are often referred to as "Chinese peony", "garden peony", "bush peony", or "herbaceous peony" (the names are used interchangeably in catalogues). Strictly speaking, the term "herbaceous" means that the plant dies down in the fall, and new growth comes up in spring. This is true for most species of the Paeonia genus. It is NOT true, however, for the species which is normally called the Tree Peony.

Tree Peony - Tree peonies (Paeonia rockii) have woody stems that lose their leaves in the fall, but the woody stems stay intact.  They tend to bloom earlier and with larger flowers than the herbaceous peony. Despite this, they are generally not as popular as herbaceous peonies, because they are such slow growers. They have been of most commercial interest recently as a source of hybrids, which are called "Intersectional peonies".

Intersectional Peony - Intersectional Peonies are hybrids; they are derived from a cross between a white Herbaceous Peony (Paeonia lactiflora 'Kakoden') and a yellow hybrid Tree Peony (Paeonia x lemoinei) carried out in 1948 by Mr. Toichi Itoh. For this reason, they are also known as Itoh hybrids or Itoh peonies.

Intersectionals are valued because they are available in colours that traditional peonies can't produce — in particular, more intense shades of yellow, peach, and coral.  These plants have the lovely leaf form of the tree peonies, but die to the ground in the winter like herbaceous peonies. The plants are strong and healthy with a nice rounded bush form, but are generally shorter than most bush peonies.  Since they are recent introductions and are still in short supply, they are usually quite expensive."

Companion Plants help the peony to exhibit the most perfect blooms and peonies aid the Zinnia. Alpine Plant for Rock Garden Introduction Page states other peonies used by the Vancouver Island Rock and Alpine Garden Society

PaeoniaSingleFormGreatLadywesthead1a
The Single Form
Photo of 'Great Lady' from Mr E. Westhead - Webmaster of The Peony Society.

The Single Form - consist of a single row (or, at most, two rows) of petals - usually between 5 and 12 petals in total - around a central group of fuzzy yellow pollen-bearing stamens, with a small cluster of carpels in the very middle.

Examples of single peonies: Athena, Claire de Lune, Coral 'n Gold, Early Scout, Firelight, Flame, Illini Warrior, Krinkled White, Lavender, Paeonia mlokosewitschii, Paeonia officinalis mollis, Paeonia peregrina, Paeonia tenuifolia, Paeonia veitchii, Roselette, Roy Pehrson's Best Yellow, Scarlett O'Hara, Sea Shell, Sword Dance, White Wings

Type 1. Peonies of this class are composed of a few broad petals, a single row of which surrounds a mass of pollen-bearing stamens and seed-bearing carpels. Example: Le Printemps.

PaeoniaJapaneseFormWhiteCapwesthead1a
The Japanese Form
Photo of 'White Cap' from Mr E. Westhead - Webmaster of The Peony Society.

The Japanese Form - have a large, central cluster of stamens which have all been transformed into very slender petals called stamenodes (or stamenoids). Usually the edges and tips of the stamenodes are yellow (representing the remains of the yellow pollen colour). Japanese-form peonies are also known as "Imperial" peonies.

Examples of Japanese peonies: Bride's Dream, Bu-te, Doreen, Gold Standard, Honey Gold, Jan van Leeuwen, Le Charme, Mahogany, Mikado, Nippon Beauty, Walter Mains, Westerner

Type 2. In this class the doubling process has just begun. The filaments of the stamens have broadened and the anthers have become extremely large. The guard petals remain the same as in the single type. Example: Mrs McKinley.

PaeoniaAnemoneFormBowlofBeautywesthead1a
The Anemone Form
Photo of 'Bowl of Beauty' from Mr E. Westhead - Webmaster of The Peony Society.

The Anemone Form - are usually considered a version of the Japanese type. Anemone-form blossoms look very much like Japanese-form blooms, but the staminodes have are even more petal-like (although still very narrow in many cases) and are now referred to as petalodes (or sometimes petaloids). Also (unlike the stamenodes of the Japanese form), the anemone-form petalodes are almost always a single colour throughout the petal.

Examples of anemone-form peonies: Bowl of Beauty, Butter Bowl, Do Tell, Fancy Nancy, Gay Paree, Laura Dessert, Primevère, Show Girl, White Sands
Type 3. This is the next development. The filaments of the stamens are still broader than in the Japanese type, having become narrow petals which fill the centre of the bloom. While the anthers have completely disappeared, the centre petals are still narrow and short. Example: Anemoniflora rubra.

PaeoniaSemiDoubleFormAugustDessertwesthead1a
The Semi-Double Form
Photo of 'August Dessert' from Mr E. Westhead - Webmaster of The Peony Society.

The Semi-Double Form - have two, three, or more rows; typically have some irregularly-shaped petaloids. In some cases the yellow stamens are mixed in with the petaloids; in others there is a distinct centre made up of stamens and carpels.

Examples of semi-double peonies: Auguste Dessert, Buckeye Belle, Cora Louise, Coral Charm, Dandy Dan, Miss America, Nice Gal, Paula Fay, Pink Hawaiian Coral, Red Red Rose
Type 4. Flowers of this type contain filaments which have widened irregularly, making petaloids of varying widths throughout which stamens are mixed. The guard petals may or may not be clearly differentiated. Example: Stephania

Type 7. The Semi-Rose Form from 8 Types described in The Peony. Introduced and Updated by Roy G. Klehm. Published by B.T. Batsford Ltd in 1993.

Type 7. In flowers of this class all the petals are uniformly wide, differing from the full rose type in the presence of a few stamens. Example of semi-rose peonies: Asa Gray.

'Types - In the process of development from the original single type, the herbaceous peony has acquired certain forms or types which have been classified and named "bomb", "crown", "rose", etc, the full descriptions of which are written out in this blue text. The stamens - the fertilising organs of flowering plants, consisting of (a) filaments or supports, and (b) anthers or double sacs filled with pollen - have in some types of the peony broadened and thickened into additional petals called staminoides.

Type 8. The Rose (Fully Double) Form from 8 Types described in The Peony. Introduced and Updated by Roy G. Klehm. Published by B.T. Batsford Ltd in 1993.

Likewise the carpels - the seed-bearing organs - have developed into petals called carpelodes. For brevity and convenience staminoides and carpelodes are usually called petaloids. The words staminoides, carpelodes and petaloids are all used in describing types. When the word "guards" is employed it means the outside or primary petals. When the word "differentiated" occurs reference is made to the degree of difference in appearance between the outside petals or guards and the petaloids within.

Type 8. This type completes the process of doubling. All the stamens and carpels have developed into petals resembling the guard petals. Example of rose peonies: Mme Lemonier.

PaeoniaCrownFormPillowTalkwesthead1a
The Crown Form
Photo of mature flower of 'Pillow Talk' from Mr E. Westhead - Webmaster of The Peony Society.

The Crown Form - Flowers may also be described as ‘double’. The outer row of petals becomes very distinct as the flower ages, leaving a centre dome of slightly raised petals.
Also described as many layers of ruffled petals; usually no stamens are visible (since all or most of them have become petals). However, sometimes a thin ring of natural stamens will be seen in among the petals.

Examples of fully double peonies: Ann Cousins, Attar of Roses, Baroness Schroeder, Bowl of Cream, Candy Stripe, Chestine Gowdy, David Harum, Dinner Plate, Dr. Alexander Fleming, Duchesse de Nemours, Edulis Superba, Elsa Sass, Etched Salmon, Festiva Maxima, Gardenia, Gilbert H. Wild, Henry Bockstoce, Hermione, Kansas, Karl Rosenfield, La France, Le Cygne, Madame Jules Dessert, Maestro, Martha Bulloch, Mother's Choice, Mrs. Edward Harding, Mrs. Euclid Snow, Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Myrtle Gentry, Nick Shaylor, Paeonia officinalis, Paul M. Wild, Pillow Talk, Princess Margaret, Ruth Clay, Sarah Bernhardt, Shirley Temple, Solange, Sorbet, Thérèse, Tourangelle, Walter Faxon

Type 5. In this class the petaloids originating from the carpels differ from the petaloids, developing from the stamens as well as from the guard petals. Example: Madame de Vatry.

USE OF PEONY:-

  • Front of Border / Path Edges - Soften edges for large masses of paving or lawn with peonies.
  • Rest of Border - Other peony plants are planted in the Rest of the Border.
  • Grow as Hedge to divide your garden into separate areas.
  • Grow for Flower Arrangers to provide your household with your own flowers for your arrangements.
  • Seaside Plants that deal with salt-carrying gales and blown sand; by you using copious amounts of compost and thick mulch to conserve soil moisture.
  • Fragrant Flowers - Avoid these peonies if scent is not required.

Suggestions:-

The Bomb Form

The Bomb Form - (sometimes called "bomb double", as it is considered a type of double). Typically, the center segments form a nice, round ball, sitting on top of a lower ring of "guard" petals, which are sometimes of a different colour. (The word "bomb" probably comes from "bombe" which is the name of a round, frozen desert popular after World War I.).

Examples of bomb form peonies: Angel Cheeks, Big Ben, Charlie's White, Fairy's Petticoat, Félix Crousse, Mister Ed, Monsieur Jules Elie, Raspberry Sundae, Red Charm, Top Brass
Type 6. In this type the petaloids derived from both carpels and stamens have become much broader, without any crown, but still are clearly differentiated from the guard petals. Example: Felix Crousse

Comment

Fragrance - 'Single varieties are usually lacking in perfume and frequently have a disagreeable odour.
Mr. A. H. Fewkes notes that sweet odour follows closely upon the development in breeding of the stamens into petals, and that the full double (rose type) is the most fragrant. In the single and semi-double varieties the pungence of the pollen overcomes the fragrance of such few petals as there are. The fact that colour has some mysterious influence upon perfume, and that the full double rose-pink varieties are the most fragrant, while the single or semi-double reds are inclined to be ill-smelling, and the full double reds, in most instances, lack odour entirely.'

The Peony Group of the Hardy Plant Society Newsletter Autumn 2015 - In this issue we have, as well as reports from the officers and an account of the 2015 Peony Day, two welcome articles from new members. Sue Hough's article also promoted interest in the P. obovata group as the succeeding article shows. We also have the latest of Judy Templar's reports on peonies in the wild. At the other end of the peony spectrum, Itoh hybrids are becoming well known, as many of us saw on the Peony Day and as we shall see at Claire Austin's nursery in 2016.

and
Why the sight of flowers from 1 in 4 permanent herbaceous perennials
in this border is not available

The variety of plants that can be used in alpine gardening is obviously very large and very bewildering at first approach. With a view to easing the task of selection here are lists
of alpines most likely to thrive
and flourish under certain easily defined conditions and for special purposes, with
Alpines and Paving.

The standard potting and seed-soil recipes from The Propagation of Alpines by Lawrence D. Hills are at the bottom of the page on Alpine - Sink and Trough Gardens.

Phlox paniculata 'Nesperis'

Dear Mr C H Garnons-Williams,
Thank you for your enquiry to the Royal Horticultural Society's Members' Advisory Service.
On investigation, I have concluded that the phlox labelled as 'Nesperis' in the garden is in fact: Phlox x arendsii 'Hesperis' .
A search on the internet will generate a great deal of information on this cultivar.
I hope this information is helpful.
Yours sincerely,

Tony Dickerson
Horticultural Advisor

I wonder if there is a mail-order nursery in China that grows and sells this plant in China with its information on its website in both Chinese and English? Then, I could copy the information from China into the Comments Row of that Plant Description page in this website with links to both its English and Chinese page from its Chinese Nursery website about that plant. The information in Chinese and it's English translation could be sent via email to The Embassy of China in Britain; and thence to me using this email address. Then, people from China visiting this country could inform their relatives where they also could get that plant.

I am attempting the same free link to mail-order nursery service for the people of Europe, Latvia, America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

'Tree & Herbaceous Peony in Modern Japan' by Ryoji Hashida Shimane, Japan 1990 ISBN 4-06-2048 12-4 is published by the 'Japanese Botan Society' and is one of the very few authentical and authorised sources for the spelling and naming of the japanese tree and herbaceous cultivars. Published in Japanese.

I wonder if there is a version published in English or Hebrew (I took the 5 month course in Aleph and Bet at a Kibbutz Ulpan in 1968 and received my certificate. My Hebrew is a little rusty after 49 years of non-use).
