Comment |
Erect Form. Pruning Group 14. "This is one of the tallest Meadow-rue selections, forming a narrow and upright mound of lacy blue-green foliage, a little bit like a Columbine or Maidenhair Fern in effect. In midsummer the purplish stems hold loose and elegant sprays of soft lavender flowers, with a contrasting tuft of yellow stamens. An unusual cut flower. Terrific in the woodland garden, or a moist sunny border. Stems may require staking. Clumps may be carefully divided in spring every 3 to 4 years if desired. Cut back to the ground in late autumn. Bred by Coen Jansen of the Netherlands." from Heritage Perennials. "A pastel color combination all in one plant. In spring, the shoots emerge purple then unfurl their finely cut blue-green foliage. The flower clusters look like clouds of mauve and cream. Tall and self-supporting, 'Elin' is superb at the back of the border. It's a hybrid between Thalictrum flavum glaucum and T. rochebrunianum that sets no seed, so plants flower for months. This genus in the amazingly diverse Buttercup family includes some 130 species, most of them northerners. The form of the flower varies from species to species, but all are small and delicate and are generally carried on tall, slender stems that produce a delightful, airy effect. Partial shade and rich soil give best results, but plants will take more sun if the soil remains evenly moist." from White Flower Farm - They have a Gardening Help page which links to:-
"Once upon a time, the newborn infant was placed upon a pillow filled with Meadow-Rue to ensure a prosperous life. Thalictrum means “to flourish,” and it does, with elegant foamlike sprays that resemble Baby’s Breath, and rounded, finely cut, compound foliage. Tougher than it appears, Thalictrum is the perfect choice for the border. Loosely garbed in striking steely blue foliage, ‘Elin’s tall purple-tinged stems maintain a stately carriage. Its sturdy upright stalks culminate in open sprays of pale yellow stamens and lavender petals. Known to grow up to 12 ft. tall, this lofty Thalictrum paints soft smoky hues in the background and seldom needs staking." from Digging Dog Nursery. "Thalictrum are tall plants with lacy-looking buds that open into clusters of soft flowers; I stumbled into them by chance at a nursery 17 years ago. When I picked up the first variety that I saw, the plant tag indicated that it was tall. That is all I needed to know. Since I first placed it in my own garden, I have been rewarded with unusually delicate flower buds, on tall strong spikes, that appear to almost sing from a distance before they open up. In all the years that I have been growing this plant, the foliage has remained neat and compact at its mound-like base. It prefers dappled sunlight and is quite happy to grow in part shade. However, in direct sun, it will require extra moisture and it will bow towards the path of moving light. Staking the plant will correct that penchant. I use garden twine to secure the stalk right underneath the neck of the flower head while some gardeners are happy to let this perennial lean into neighboring plants for the unusual effect it creates." from Allan Becker - He " designs and plants flower gardens in Montreal, Canada, [USDA Zone 4 or CNDN Zone 5] lectures on design, and offers a garden coach service." The variety of plants that can be used in alpine gardening is obviously very large and very bewildering at first approach.
