Comment	Upright Form. "Cosmos sulphureus is an annual that is easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. Tolerates dryish soils. Also tolerates poor soils. Avoid rich fertile soils because plants may grow too tall and flop over. Plant seed in the garden just before last spring frost date. Seed may also be started indoors about 4-6 weeks prior to the last spring frost date. Deadhead spent flowers to prolong bloom. Taller plants may be cut back. Plants will sometimes self-seed, particularly if seed drops on bare ground. Self-seeding may rise to the level of being aggressive in some climates and conditions. Seed may be harvested in fall for planting the following spring. Native to Mexico, this cosmos is an upright, hairy-stemmed, warm-weather annual that typically grows to 1-3’ tall, but can grow to as much as 6’ tall. It produces daisy-like flowers (to 2.5” diameter) with yellow discs and yellow rays. Leaves (to 12” long) are 2-3 pinnate with lanceolate leaflets. Popular cultivars of this species are in many cases compact to dwarf plants with semi-double to double flowers and with flower colors ranging from orange to yellow to scarlet red. Attracts butterflies." from Missouri Botanical Garden. "Cosmos sulphureus 'Dwarf Ladybird Scarlet' are dwarf plants with arresting scarlet to orange-scarlet flowers. Under dry and sunny conditions, most flowers are scarlet, whilst in opposite conditions they change to orange-red shades. Sow Cosmos seed from March to May at a depth of 3mm (⅛") in a good quality seed compost, and cover the seeds with a very fine sprinkling of vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 18-25C (64-77F) or seal it inside a polythene bag. Keep the soil damp but not wet. Do not exclude light as this aids germination which usually takes 7-15 days. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7cm (3") pots and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When Cosmos plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Transplant outdoors in full sun in any moist, well drained soil at a distance of 45cm (18") apart. Pinch out the growing tip of each stem when transplanting to encourage stems to branch and produce more Cosmos flowers." from Thompson & Morgan. "Cosmos sulphureus is also known as Sulfur Cosmos and Yellow Cosmos. Its native habitat is Central America. This species of Cosmos is considered a half-hardy annual, although plants may re-appear via self-sowing for several years. Its foliage is opposite and pinnately divided. The plant height varies from one to seven feet. The original and its cultivars appear in shades of yellow, orange, and red. It is especially popular in Korea and Japan, where it is often seen in mass plantings along roadsides, following an initiative pursued by the Korean-Japanese botanist Woo Jang-choon. This plant was declared invasive by the United States Southeast Exotic Pest Plant Council in 1996. Some of the varieties of Cosmos sulphureus in cultivation today include: 'Klondyke Mix' consists of a variety of colors in shades from yellow to orange and scarlet 'Ladybird Dwarf Red', 'Ladybird Dwarf Gold', 'Ladybird Dwarf Orange', and 'Ladybird Dwarf Lemon' are shorter than the species. Another cultivar is named "Bright Eyes". Growth characteristics of this plant include: Germination takes between 7 and 21 days at the optimal temperature of 75 degrees Fahrenheit; flowering begins between 50 and 60 days after germination It prefers a soil pH between 6.0 and 8.5, reflecting its native habitat in the alkaline regions of Central America Flowering is best in full sun, although partial shade is tolerated The plant is tolerant to drought after germination, and is seldom subject to insect or disease damage; this vigor is attested by its status as a pest in some areas of the United States. The flowers of all Cosmos attract birds and butterflies, including the Monarch butterfly. Cosmos sulphureus is featured in the 1997 Japanese film 'Remembering the Cosmos Flower' ." from Wikipedia.
