Comment |
Erect Form. "Hyssops are great for adding height to a border, with whorls of long-lasting, tiny flowers arranged like a bottlebrush and pointed, aromatic fresh green leaves that are attractive to butterflies. They are short-lived though, and may need replacing every few years, especially after a cold or wet winter. 'Black Adder' has smoky, violet flowers on long spires from July to October. Try it as part of a Mediterranean scheme or in a sunny, well-drained border among ornamental grasses. Don't cut back the faded flower-stems until early spring, as they provide interest in the winter months. Lift and divide congested colonies in spring. The ultimate midsummer bee plant with soft, stubby blue bottle brushes tinged with black- purple -the antidote to sunny orange calendulas" from Crocus. "Its compact bushy habit makes it ideal for containers as well as borders. Space 12 inches (30 cms) apart. Make sure the roots are not allowed to dry out once planted and take some care to protect from strong winter winds/frost." from J. Parkers. "A long-blooming selection for the middle to back of the border, featuring long wands of dark purple bracts that hold soft smoky-lavender blooms. Foliage is dark green and licorice-scented. Attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. Flowers are excellent for cutting. Pinch in June to keep plants compact if desired. Easily divided in the spring. " from Heritage Perennials. "Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Best in full sun. Good soil drainage is essential. Plants will perform poorly and may not survive winter in hard clay soils that retain moisture. Plants tolerate heat and some dry soils once established. Deadhead spent flowers to promote additional bloom. Plants may not be reliably winter hardy throughout the St. Louis area where they should be planted in protected locations (e.g., southern exposures). Leave leaf and flower stems up during the winter for additional protection, cutting back the dead stems in late winter to early spring. Sandy/gravelly mulches will protect plants and help to avoid onset of rot. Self-seeding will not occur with this sterile cultivar. 'Black Adder' is an upright, clump-forming giant hyssop that grows to 2-3' tall. It is a hybrid resulting from a cross between A. rugosum and A. foeniculum. It is noted for its long summer-to-frost floral display of tubular, 2-lipped, smoky red-violet flowers that bloom in showy, bottle-brush, terminal spikes (to 6-8" long). Flowers appear in many-flowered verticillasters (false whorls) which are densely packed to form the flower spikes. Flowers emerge from nearly black buds. Aromatic (anise/licorice scented), lance-shaped to ovate leaves are blue green. Flowers are attractive to bees, hummingbirds and butterflies." from Missouri Botanical Garden. Available from Crocus , J. Parkers and Caths Garden Plants in the UK with Big Dipper Farm in America. |
Companions |
"It is a clump forming deciduous perennial with smokey-lilac flowers opening from dark purple buds over a long period from July to October. Approx. 1m tall or taller so good at the back of a border or planted to make a statement. Fantastic at attracting bees and butterflies. Best in sun in a very well-drained, soil. Can be cut back to encourage a second flush of flowers. The plants in our own garden have survived this past winter without any protection. It mixes well with other plants of similar colours or with contrasts. Nepetas with their lilac-blue flowers and silvery foliage, Echinacea in pink or white forms, Coreopsis or Anthemis. " from Caths Garden Plants. "Autumn tends to major in burnished golds, coppery browns and brash yellows, but these can look uninspiring when planted en masse. Adding the sooty, blue-black spires of Agastache 'Blackadder’ as a contrast adds vibrancy to warm oranges and golden yellows. The late-flowering Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora 'Star of the East’, for instance, will take on a metallic aura in front of the sultry 'Blackadder’, producing wide starry flowers that can measure two inches across into late September. The taller acid-yellow heads of Euphorbia sikkimensis, allowed to pop up behind both, will provide added zing through August and September, mingling with the dark agastache." from The Telegraph. |

"With South African origins they are all sun lovers, but they would be used to summer rainfall so we suggest they will do better where they aren't too dry. Hence lots of organic matter in the soil to hold the moisture will pay dividends. It does sometimes take a while for an Agapanthus crown to flower well again, so expect better flowers in the second year. This form need planting in the sun 3-4" deep and about 12" apart." from Avon Bulbs. |
