Semi-prostrate form. Pruning Group 1. A glorious trailer for terracotta pots on the patio or as sprawling ground cover in the border and available from Gardening Express with cultivation notes from Find Me Plants. Myrtle spurge is classified as a noxious weed in the U.S. State of Oregon, subject to quarantine. The milky sap can cause significant skin and eye irritations. "An unusual plant, resembling a cluster of elongated silvery-green fir cones, with pale silvery green scale-like leaves overlapping all the way along the prostrate stems. In early summer these have typical flat heads of yellow euphorbia flowers at the ends. Drought tolerant, it is a good plant to grow in a rock garden or in a hollow topped wall, but also thrives in any hot dry sunny situation where drainage is good and the soil does not stay wet in winter. Use it for the front of borders, a gravel garden, or bank. Its striking shape and texture make it a good winter patio plant." from the BBC. "Euphorbia myrsinites is a prostrate-growing evergreen perennial with trailing stems clad in broad, silver-grey leaves resembling Monkey Puzzle stems sprayed with grey undercoat paint. Typical 'spurge' flowers are produced at the stem tips in the spring of their second season. The Myrtle Spurge is one of the most useful plants to grow in the rock garden or Mediterranean garden, with a texture, colour and form that associates with a vast array of companion plants. Supremely drought tolerant. Like all spurges, all parts are poisonous and the milky sap can be irritant." from The Palm Centre . Available from BBC and The Palm Centre in the UK with Jindivick Country Gardener in Australia and Nikau Hill Nursery and Water Gardens in New Zealand - "Hi there, We are Doreen and Derek Higginson and come from a teaching and farming and gardening background. We did farm for many years before moving the nursery to Marton and settling into growing plants full time. We are a family business with a nursery, water gardens and boutique plant centre. We started in a small way 18 years ago and have grown larger and larger with time. These days we have three staff plus ourselves and part timers working in and on the business. Many years ago we got our daughter’s partner to get us started with a web site as we realized that printed catalogues were an expensive option and young gardeners were starting to purchase on line. At first it generated only 5% of our sales but these days it is 90% of our sales." statement copied to here in January 2013. |
