A perennial herb, usually found on calcareous or other base-rich soils. Its habitats include open woodlands, hedge banks and scrub, and less frequently shady road and railway banks and verges. Alien populations are naturalised in churchyards and elsewhere. Reproduction is by seed and by rooting stolons. Native in all Europe, except in Iceland, Finland and Turkey. |
"It grows naturally on banks, in copses and in hedgerows. In the garden it will adapt to any shady location, in grass under trees, under hedges or in the border. Plant out in early autumn or late spring, 12 (30) apart in part shade of any soil. Plants spread naturally by runners. These can be rooted in summer or the whole plant can be divided in autumn. The Latin specific name, tricolor - refers to the purple, white, and yellow hues that give character to the quaint face of the Heartsease. It is "Heartsease" because it was reputed potent in love charms.

A hemiparasite on a wide range of trees in orchards, hedgerows, parklands and gardens, but rarely in dense or primary woodlands. Its most frequent hosts are Malus spp., followed by Tilia x europaea, Crataegus spp. (its commonest native hosts), Populus spp., Acer spp., Salix spp. and Robinia pseudoacacia. Native in all Europe, except in Ireland, Iceland and Finland. |

This is a perennial which grows on sheltered tidal mudflats, in estuaries and in coastal lagoons, usually in shallower, more turbid water than Z. marina. It is usually found on mud or muddy sands, between the half-tide and low-tide marks. Lowland. Article on Zostera from Journal of Ecology.

Although a coastal species, this perennial is found at higher levels of the shore than other Zostera species. It grows in sheltered estuaries and harbours, where it is found on mixed substrates of sand and mud. Plants are often concentrated in pools or runnels on the shore. On mud-banks in creeks and estuaries from half-tide mark to low-tide mark. |

Article by Sam Jones in The Guardian Monday 9 May 2005 states:- "Almost a fifth of Britain's plant species are struggling to survive the threats posed by agriculture, overgrazing and the use of herbicides and fertilisers, says a report published today. The Vascular Plant Red Data List for Great Britain is the result of a two-year survey of British flora. Its analysis shows that out of 1,756 species and subspecies, 345 (19.6%) are threatened. The report also notes that efforts to save rare species have not been matched by initiatives to safeguard more familiar plants which are now under threat. Among once-common species in serious decline are corn spurrey, purple milk-vetch, basil thyme, lesser butterfly and frog orchids and tubular water dropwort. Also on the list is henbane, the malodorous herb with which Dr Crippen infamously dispatched his wife in 1910. Work on the project began in January 2003 when botanists from across the UK were invited to join a working group set up to revise the list of endangered wild plants. They were charged with drawing up a new catalogue of threatened species and classifying them as "extinct", "critically endangered", "vulnerable" or of "least concern". The study was co-ordinated by the government's wildlife advisory body, the Joint Nature Conservation Committee, and involved groups such as Scottish National Heritage, the Biological Records Centre, the Botanical Society for the British Isles, the Countryside Council for Wales, English Nature, the Natural History Museum, the conservation charity Plantlife and the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh. In contrast to previous red lists, the new survey analysed the decline of each species instead of simply listing those that occur in a small number of sites. It also treated all species - including hybrids - equally, regardless of whether they were native or archaeophyte (introduced before AD1500). The survey found that some species of grassland plants are disappearing, with many clinging on only in small roadside groups. Arable plants, too, have almost disappeared from large areas of the country while upland plants are declining because of overgrazing. "The diversity of our countryside is being constantly degraded as habitats are fragmented and the associated plants are lost," the report says. Although reversing the decline will be "a massive challenge", it is not impossible. "[Regeneration] ... can only happen through changing the policies for countryside management. However, with the improved understanding presented in this report, we can be optimistic that we know where to focus our efforts." Simon Leach, a botanical adviser at English Nature, said: "We've been rather good at stopping rare plants from becoming extinct, but less good, perhaps, at stopping common plants from becoming less common. "We are hoping that agri-environment schemes and other landscape-scale initiatives will help to arrest and reverse the decline of many of these declining species. The new red list points to those that need the most urgent action." Trevor Dines, a conservation officer at Plantlife, said there was no time for complacency about more common species. "It's horrifying that there are only 11 plants of western juniper left in Britain, for example, yet it has never been listed as a threatened species before." Threatened flora Among plants not before classified as at risk but now threatened are: Ranunculus arvensis - corn buttercup (critically endangered). A very attractive annual buttercup with small yellow flowers, it came to Britain with Roman farmers. Papaver argemone - prickly poppy (vulnerable). A small, brightly flowered poppy which has not yet made the jump to waysides and road verges as the common poppy has. Silene noctiflora - night-flowering catchfly (vulnerable). Its creamy-white flowers are semi-closed during the day, but at night reopen fully and emit a strong scent to attract insects. Astragalus danicus - purple milk-vetch (endangered). Found along the east coast from Scotland to Lincoln and East Anglia. Euphrasia anglica - eyebright (endangered). Its tiny white flowers are blotched with yellow and purple like a bruised eye. Compresses and tinctures from it were used to treat many eye disorders. Monotropa hypopitys - yellow bird's-nest (endangered). An odd-looking perennial herb that lives on dead and decaying plant material in the soil. Polystichum lonchitis - holly fern (vulnerable). An evergreen alpine fern that is small but long-lived. Small populations in Wales and the Lake District; more frequent in the Scottish uplands and western Scotland. Cuscuta epithymum - dodder (vulnerable). An annual, rootless, twining and scrambling herb which is a parasite, attaching itself to its host by small suckers that remove water and nutrients. Gentianella campestris - field gentian (vulnerable). A biennial or annual herb with attractive, purply-blue flowers. It is locally common in northern England and Scotland, but absent from most of south and central Britain." |

An indication of whether the foodplant is a primary or secondary food source is also given. Please note that the Butterfly you see for only a short time has grown up on plants as an egg, caterpillar and chrysalis for up to 11 months, before becoming a butterfly. The following is an excerpt from my Comments about the proposed destruction of the wildlife habitats at Cobtree Manor Park in the summer of 2010 from my Mission Statement page:- "We would be sorry to lose the butterflies on the bluebells, bramble and ivy that would be restricted to only the very small area of proposed Wildlife Meadow by the Woods at the bottom of a hill with water springs on it. The wildlife is now being excluded from all the other areas by the "pruning", so that the nettles, brambles etc which had for instance the butterfly life cycle included; are now being ruthlessly removed to create a garden, not a park, with neat little areas." When you look at the life history graphs of each of the 68 butterflies of Britain, you will see that they use plants throughout all 12 months - the information of what plant is used by the egg, caterpillar, chrysalis or butterfly is also given in the table on the left. With this proposed removal of all plants required for butterflies etc to live in and pro-create; at least once a year by the autumn or spring clearing up, you destroy the wildlife in this park as is done in every managed park in the world. Please leave something for the wildlife to live in without disturbance; rather than destroy everything so children can ride their bicycles anywhere they want when the park is open during the day and they are not at school. |

"They are also very important to the city of New York (and not just because the leaf is the Parks Department logo). The London Plane, usually considered Platanus x acerifolia but also known by other Latin epithets, is not really native, although it very closely resembles the native American sycamore, Platanus occidentalis. Actually, it is probably a cross between this American species and Platanus orientalis, a Eurasian relative. In any case, it has been widely planted as a city tree for decades, which turns out to be a good idea. In its assessment of the New York City urban forest, the US Forest Service Northern Research Station determined that the London plane is the most important city tree we have. They base this conclusion on several factors. For one thing, London planes have a very high leaf area per tree; that is, the London plane gives us a lot more pretty, shady, air-filtering, evaporatively-cooling leaves per single trunk than most other species in the city. In fact, according to the Forest Service, London planes make up just 4% of the city tree population, but represent 14% of the city's total leaf area. (Compare this with the virulently invasive tree of heaven [Ailanthus altissima], which constitutes 9% of the tree population but only about 4% of the total leaf area.) Also, because they tend to become very tall and have large canopies, London planes are our best trees for carbon storage and sequestration. They are holding on to about 185,000 tons of carbon (14% of the total urban tree carbon pool), and each year they sequester another 5,500 or so tons (about 13% of all the carbon sequestered by city trees each year). That makes them both gorgeous and highly beneficial: all in all, good trees to have around." |

There are 720 roses in the Rose Galleries; many of which have the above series of pictures in their respective Rose Description Page. So one might avoid the disappointment that the 2 elephants had when their trunks were entwined instead of them each carrying their trunk using their own trunk, and your disappointment of buying a rose to discover that the colour you bought it for is only the case when it has its juvenile flowers; if you look at all the photos of the roses in the respective Rose Description Page!!!! |

My current ambition at my retired age of 73 in 2022 (having started this website in 2005) is to complete the following:- Wildflower Flower Shape and Landscape Uses Gallery has an empty framework that I created on 20 February 2022. When all the remainder of the UK wildflowers have been checked:-
Then, the wildflower entries in the Wildflower Flower Shape and Landscape Uses Gallery will be filled in after each Wildflower has its cultivation details added to the Botanical Names and Common Names Galleries. Starting the above from 20 February 2022, I think it might take me a few years, but it does mean that as I progress then you will be able to associate more wildflowers with more of all the plant types of the cultivated plants who have similar growing requirements. Then, more of the natural world with its wildlife could also inhabit your garden. |
