The 2 rows of "Height x Spread in inches (cms) (1 inch = 2.5 cms, 12" = 1 foot = 30 cms) and Comment" state the Heather Description from 'Handy Guide to Heathers Descriptions & Suppliers of over 1000 varieties" by David & Anne Small, published in 1992 by Denbeigh Heather Nurseries (ISBN 0-9519160-0-9). This gives the official Heather Society flower colour(s) and foliage colour(s).
Photos from Chris Garnons-Williams are added to that respective flower colour or foliage colour page in the Shrub Heather Gallery and the relevant index page in this gallery IRRESPECTIVE OF THE ACTUAL FLOWER COLOUR OR FOLIAGE COLOUR (stated in the Handy Guide) IN THE IMAGE THAT WAS TAKEN BY CHRIS GARNONS-WILLIAMS.

Height x Spread in inches (cms) (1 inch = 2.5 cms, 12" = 1 foot = 30 cms)
and Comment

10 x 20 (25 x 50)

Pale rose-pink flowers, June-July, with dark green foliage. Well worth adding to the heather garden.

6 x 12 (15 x 30)

Heliotrope flowers, June-July, with dark grey green foliage. Very much more attractive than the species.

12 x 24 (30 x 60)

Lavender (H3) flowers, July-August, with grey green foliage. Spreading habit.
Flowers compliment foliage well

16 x 22 (40 x 55)

White flowers, August-September, with bright green foliage. Although sold under the cultivar name 'Alba', they are not all the same clone and the name merely represents any 'lucky white heather'. The term f. alba covers all the whites.

14 x 18 (35 x 45)

White flowers, July-September, with mid green foliage. Broad spreading habit.

20 x 28 (50 x 70)

White flowers, August-October, with mid green foliage. An outstanding plant.

12 x 20 (30 x 50)

Large glowing Magenta flowers, July-October, with dark green foliage. Compact habit

Height x Spread in inches (cms) (1 inch = 2.5 cms, 12" = 1 foot = 30 cms)
and Comment

16 x 28 (40 x 70)

Deep purple (H10) flowers, June-October, with dark green glossy foliage.

14 x 26 (35 x 65)

White and Beetroot (H9) flowers, June-November, with mid green foliage.
"'Bicolor' is a spreading evergreen dwarf shrub with small ovate leaves and long racemes of urn-shaped flowers 10mm in length, which may be purple, white or striped with both colours" from RHS.

14 x 20 (35 x 50)

Clear Rose Pink (H7) flowers, June-October, with dark green foliage. Compact habit.

4 x 14 (10 x 35)

White flowers, July-October, with mid green foliage. Broad spreading habit. A sport from ‘Lawsoniana’ found by Dr Ronald Gray (Hindhead, Surrey).

10 x 22 (25 x 55)

White flowers, VII–IX, large, very floriferous; mid-grey-green foliage; vigorous; height 21–25cm; spread 46–60cm. Outstanding, one of the best white heathers; much better than ‘Doctor Ronald Gray’.

48 x 30 (120 x 75)

White flowers, IV–V, profuse; lime-green foliage with bright yellow young shoots in spring; broad compact habit; height 1m and more; spread 61–75cm. Hardier than some other clones. Collected in Serra da Estrela near Coimbra, Portugal, in 1972 by R. Zwijnenburg and introduced first in the Netherlands.

48 x 34 (120 x 85)

Lilac-pink (H11) flowers, IV–VI; dark green foliage; height at least 1m; spread 75–100cm. Outstanding, but requires to be well pruned to avoid it becoming straggly.

Some heathers besides having flowers have foliage colours that change from 1 season to the next season in the UK -

  • Spring (March, April, May),
  • Summer (June, July, August),
  • Autumn (September, October, November) and
  • Winter (December, January, February).

The Heather Comparison Gallery provides comparison pages of the:-

  • 18 flower colours with flower and flower stalk as shown in the menu table at the top of this page,
  • 18 flower colours with flower and flower stalk in each of the months that heather flowers,
  • 7 foliage colours with foliage stalk and form per season as shown in the menu table at the top of this page, and
  • Each of the Heather Cultivar Groups with flowers

and the Index for the heathers shown in each of these Comparison Pages is in 1 or more Index Pages in the relevant Heather Evergreen Shrub Index Gallery instead of being in the same Comparison page, due to their being too many to include within the available space.
THIS COMBINATION OF FOLIAGE COLOUR CHANGE CAN BE USED IN YOUR GARDEN DESIGN TO AID DIFFERENT GROUNDCOVER FOLIAGE COLOURS IN DIFFERENT SEASONS, together with the months of flower buds before flowering and the post months of seedheads.
