verbenabfolxhybridagarnonswilliams

"Verbena X hybrida, the Verbena hybrids or garden verbenas, are a product of garden cultivation, and do not occur naturally in the wild. However some cultivars have escaped and become established in the southern U.S. They come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors. Some are erect and bushy; others trailing and mat forming; some dense and compact; others open and spreading. The individual flowers are small, but borne in dense, many-flowered clusters to 3 in (7.5 cm) or more across. The flower clusters can be flattened, rounded or spikelike. Corolla colors include white, pink, crimson, scarlet, vermilion, purple, blue, and yellow, and each flower usually has a white central eye. " from Floridata.

Since this label does not have a cultivar name, then it is difficult to verify its identity and its details, so no further information about this plant will be inserted into this website.

Solution to Unemployment in Britain:-

"The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Auckland, New Zealand, have taught 3 rescue dogs to drive in an effort to encourage people to adopt and love shelter pets."

Besides the trained dogs who aid Blind People in walking, these other dogs could be trained to drive in Britain. Then, when a Blind person wishes to be driven, an unemployed person could earn their benefit by being in the front passenger seat giving directions to the dog who is doing the driving, but not to the dog who is sitting in the back seat alongside the Blind passenger.

The Blind person gets social interaction and the unemployed person - in aiding this blind person to go further than that person can walk for shopping or to visit friends - increases their self-esteem and self-worth.

The cars are maintained and operated with the dog driver during 8 hours each week by these unemployed. The running costs, cars and car parts are paid for by the local Government Employment Department.

The following is part of a Press Release from the Royal Horticultural Society:-

"RHS GARDENS: Vital Statistics RHS GARDEN WISLEY The flagship garden of the RHS, Wisley captures the imagination with richly planted borders, luscious rose gardens and a state-of-the-art Glasshouse. Also home to RHS trials and teams of scientists and botanists, this exquisite combination ensures gardeners learn with pleasure the pure essence of Wisley.

  • 172 acres of garden set in 334 acres of land.
  • Presented to the RHS in 1903 by Sir Thomas Hanbury as a new experimental garden.
  • The garden attracts over 1 million visitors annually.
  • The garden's plant collection is one of the largest in the world, with close to 30,000 plant varieties.
  • The RHS Wisley Glasshouse, opened in 2007, covers an area equal to 10 tennis courts (3,000m2) and rises 12m (40ft) in height.
  • The Glasshouse supports more than 5,000 tender plants, making it the largest collection of cultivated glasshouse plants in the UK.
  • The Glasshouse boasts the UK's first Root Zone, where visitors can learn about the vital role that roots play.
  • In 2011, 28 plant trials were carried out in the garden, including asparagus, spring cabbage and Delphinium.
  • The Glasshouse Borders, designed by Piet Oudolf, are 147m long and 11m wide, and planted with over 16,000 perennials and grasses.
  • The garden supports five national plant collections: Crocus, Epimedium, Galanthus, heathers and rhubarb.
  • The Fruit Fields at the garden boast over 2,000 trees, including more than 1,300 different fruit cultivars and almost 700 different varieties of apple.
  • Soil at Wisley is generally acidic, free-draining, sandy loam with a natural PH of 5.5.
  • Jubilee Arboretum is 32 acres, and consists of 1000 trees from more than 90 different genera.
  • Construction of the iconic Laboratory building at Wisley was completed in 1916.
  • There are 30 champion trees at RHS Garden Wisley.
  • The famous Mixed Borders are 130m long.
  • The Rock Garden at Wisley, celebrated its 100 year anniversary in 2011, and remains one of the finest examples of a Pulhamite rock garden in Britain. "

With these Mixed Borders being 6 metres (240 inches) deep, it is comforting to know how small is the area of garden - within whom are the summer bedding and permanent plants I am attempting (as my non-income-producing continuing-into-retirement hobby) to describe and compare - at only 1560 square metres. Should keep Brain Cell No. 3 doing something; instead of snoozing.

Meadow in my Garden in the UK:-

"We are a family business based in Devizes, Wiltshire, with a love of flower meadows. Our seed mixes will transform any garden, creating a magnificent patchwork of colour throughout the summer.

We got involved with the Nova-Flore biodiversity seed mixtures a couple of years ago. Conscious of the environmental pressures which we as a society impose on bees, butterflies, other pollinating insects, and of course song birds. It was clear that we cannot go on as we are, but we were unsure at first what could be done to help.

Aware that the UK had lost some 97% of its wildflower meadows since the 1930’s, with a major impact on pollinator numbers, we focused our efforts on the average British garden; realizing that any size of garden can benefit wildlife. Whilst a large corner of a garden can be great for floral meadow planting, a pocket handkerchief can be just as good for a wildlife friendly mini-meadow, and even window boxes or planters can make a difference.

We calculated that as there are over 13,000 square kilometres of gardens in the UK – which is more than all the official nature reserves put together – we might be able to encourage British gardeners to restore a little of the living landscape lost elsewhere to urbanisation and modern agricultural methods – turning their gardens into nature reserves! By creating a diverse mosaic of habitat in this way we also avoid some of the problems of species isolation associated with official nature reserves, and help with the creation of 'bee roads'.

Meadow in my Garden is the only supplier to offer such an extensive range of Nova-Flore seed mixtures, with hundreds of options and extensive stocks you can be sure to find the right flowering solution for your garden - delivered to you from the heart of Wiltshire within just a few days.

Offering a segmented range of ‘meadow in a box’ products for the hobby gardener, we promote low maintenance, easy to succeed, low watering seed mixtures, which are friendly to pollinating insects. These mixtures contain native and non-native garden plants to create functional meadows that provide beautiful, wildlife friendly alternatives to mown grass or more formal planting in beds – or to add colour and biodiversity between trees and shrubs."

Ivydene Gardens Mixed Borders Garden Design:
Mixed Border - Bedding Plant Index

This Bedding Plant Index starts in next row from
Agapanthus 'Ben Hope' to Salvia coccinea 'Summer Jewel Red' and
it continues from
Salvia elegans 'Honey Melon' to Zinnia marylandica 'Zahara Starlight Rose'
in the table on the right.

The photos in this page were taken by Chris Garnons-Williams and H. Kavanagh in 2013.

Of the 98 named bedding plants
in the Mixed Border of the RHS garden at Wisley, neither I nor H. Kavanagh managed to take photos of their flowers with mature form during 2013 for

  • 11 of them ,
  • 17 of them had white labels with handwriiten plant information instead of the normal printed name on a black label; when their photos were taken by H. Kavanagh or me,
  • 1 had insufficient identity in its plant name - Verbena x hybrida - to be able to state exactly what its flower colour, number of flowering months, or height and width were; or anything else about the plant,
  • 2 of them had conflicting plant names Heliotropium peruvianum
'Dwarf Marine' on the White Plant Label with
Heliotropium arborescens 'Marine' on the Black Plant Label inserted later in the year for the same plant group and
  • 3 of them I could find no information about or mail-order supplier for Dahlia '15 Love', Dahlia pinnata 'Dawn Sky' or Dahlia hybrid 'Trinidad Sunset'.

H. Kavanagh and I took photos of more than the 36 bedding plants with no plant label as shown in the Un-Labelled Bedding Plant Index Page during June, July and August 2013.

A table for each month - May, June, July, August, September, October, November - shows the flower photos for each of the 71 parts of the Mixed Borders split into Blue, Orange, Pink, Red, Unusual Colour, White, or Yellow for all the plants. The Mixed Border Permanent Herbaceous plants have been added in 2013. The Bedding plants and the Mixed Border Other Permanent Plants have been added to those pages in 2014.

I am sure that as 1 of the 1,000,000 visitors to the garden at Wisley in 2012-2013 and I am not sure how many visitors in 2013-2014, that I must express my grateful thanks to the RHS that more than 50% of the Summer Bedding Plants in the Mixed Borders during the summer of 2013 could not be identified or that the writing on their white plant labels was too small to be read from the path alongside the beds.

Perhaps this might explain why I did not see the plant even when I saw its label on 10 November 2013.

It appears as if the black plant label was inserted into the ground alongside the White plant label before 16 September 2013. The brown dead flowerheads may indicate that this Pelargonium is starting to finish its growing season.

From the angle of the White label it is possible that this is why neither I nor H. Kavanagh found and photographed this plant from May to September to get its flowers, juvenile growth or overall form in its flowering season of Apr-Oct
